The Interurban Trail is a mostly car-traffic free route running from North Seattle to South Everett. Although the trail largely follows the right-of-way of the Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway, which closed in 1939, development in the fifties, sixties and beyond resulted in parts of the original route getting bisected by roads today.
North Sound Bicycle Advocates is focused on connecting a critical portion with a bridge over State Route (SR) 104 at the King-Snohomish County line - connecting the City of Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace and Edmonds Communities - to provide a more safe and continuous, car-free experience for walkers, skaters, wheelchairs users, cyclists and others.
However, getting a bridge built across SR 104 will take a lot of community effort, but there’s no better time than now. Through State and Federal funding, grants are available for projects that help to reduce carbon emissions (such as biking and walking scores), improve local connections and get people more active.
Our efforts to enable better connections across SR 105 now include similar advocacy along the Interurban Trail north of Lynnwood as a result of the planned construction of the Sound Transit Everett Link rail line from Lynnwood to Everett. The Everett extension will add 16 miles of rail and six additional stations: a provisional seventh station is included in the plans. The route of the new line will be either on the west or east side of Interstate 5 between Alderwood Mall and 164th Street SW (SR 525). The Sound Transit board will finalize the route in early 2026.
We believe the new line can be a catalyst for improving connections to the Interurban Trail and to proposed stations, particularly those at Alderwood West, Ash Way, Mariner, Evergreen and downtown Everett.
Our vision is that the Interurban Trail can be the trunk of a multi-branch tree that allows easier and safer biking trips north and south between King and Snohomish counties, and for journeys east and west that feed into this trunk route.
Only sustained and persistent advocacy of this vision for better cycling connections throughout the N. King and S. Snohomish areas will help this be a reality. We welcome your involvement in North Sound Bicycle Advocates to whatever level you can provide - once a year, or per project. If you have advocacy, marketing, social media, photography, planning skills or simply lots of enthusiasm for bikes, do get in contact.. Meetings are held monthly.
